About lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds produced in a laboratory (above the ground) from the same ingredients as natural diamonds mined from underground.
Man-made diamonds suitable for industrial use were first produced in the 1950s, and it was not until the mid-2010s that colorless lab-grown diamonds entered the market on a commercial scale. Lab-grown diamonds are nearly impossible to distinguish with the naked eye because they are composed of the same composition and thus have the same characteristics as natural diamonds. However, strictly speaking, they are not exactly the same.

Although natural diamonds are supposed to be pure carbon, they actually contain other substances such as nitrogen and boron that affect their color. In addition, natural diamonds, which are produced over thousands of years, often contain very small foreign substances in the process.

Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are made in a completely controlled environment, allowing you to adjust the ingredients at will. Therefore, it is possible to stably produce clear crystals with 100% purity that do not contain any impurities. According to GIA (Gemological Institute of America) Research Fellow Dr. James Shigley, who has been researching lab-grown diamonds for over 30 years, lab-grown diamonds are currently produced in two ways.

Two generation methods

◆ HPHT (high temperature and high pressure method)
HPHT (high pressure and high temperature) has been researched for a long time and is currently widely used as a method for producing lab-grown diamonds.
The High Pressure and High Temperature method uses a high-pressure press to reproduce and synthesize the environment in which natural diamonds are formed inside the earth. In the past, this technique was used to make melee diamonds (small stones), but as the technology improved, large grains were also produced.

◆ CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)
CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition), which was developed next, is a method for producing large-grain diamonds.
A high temperature of 1300°C is required, but unlike HPHT, high pressure is not required. Diamonds are formed little by little by applying microwave energy to methane gas containing carbon. Impurities can be finely controlled, so diamonds with higher purity can be produced.

Lab-grown diamonds can be evaluated in the same way as natural diamonds by 4C

The 4Cs (Carat, Color, Clarity, Cut) are the most important evaluations that determine the value of a diamond.

The quality of lab-grown diamonds is evaluated according to the 4Cs, just like natural diamonds.
A diamond certificate issued by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) allows you to see its value at a glance. All lab-grown diamonds are more clearly identified by their value with a GIA certificate number, allowing you to be fully informed before purchasing.

Relatively eco-friendly than natural mining, no human rights issues

These include low-wage, unpaid labor and child labor for mining raw stones. In addition, the mining of natural diamonds in terms of environmental problems is regarded as a very serious problem. Tens of thousands of tons of soil are required to mine a 1-carat rough stone, and it is believed that the carbon dioxide emitted during mining contributes to environmental destruction. In that respect, lab-grown diamonds are free from poor working conditions and environmental problems.
